Arsene Wenger fury as Andrey Arshavin is injured again
Arsene Wenger has slammed Russia coach Guus Hiddink after Andrey Arshavin was ruled out for two weeks with a groin problem. The 28-year-old aggravated the injury during last night's 3-1 win over Wales following Hiddink's decision to name him in the starting line-up despite the Gunners highlighting the situation prior to his call up for international duty.
Arshavin will miss Saturday's trip to Manchester City, next Wednesday's Champions League match at Standard Liege and the clash with Wigan at Emirates Stadium. Wenger said: "We lost Arshavin, who played with Russia last night and should not have played. He's out for Saturday, for Wednesday and certainly as well for Wigan.
"I took him out at Manchester United because of a groin problem. He did not play in Russia's first game [last Saturday against Liechtenstein] but played last night. He should not have played and is injured. You can say a lot about it but it does not do a lot. All the players are not back yet, so we have to wait a bit to see what damage has been done by the international games.”
The Gunners boss also believes the damage done to Eduardo's reputation in the wake of UEFA's decision to ban him for diving means he will now find it tougher to get penalties from referees.
The Croatia striker was felled by Glen Johnson in last night's 5-1 defeat by England without being awarded a spot-kick and Wenger believes it could be the first of many decisions to go against the 26-year-old.
He said: “Any situation you face as a top-level player you have to deal with and you can only do that by being mentally strong but this situation has been created by the media impact of his case.
“Now he is not going to be given penalties when they are penalties. The one last night against England was a penalty.
“You want everybody to be treated fairly and I do not believe he has been treated fairly. There was a good opportunity to have a media campaign against many players, not just Eduardo. He cannot have the feeling that he has been treated fairly.
“I do not believe it will affect his game. He is a player who has gone through much more difficult things than this when he broke his leg.”
Wenger will assess Cesc Fabregas's fitness later today when he returns from international duty with Spain but Theo Walcott remains absent with a back problem.
Wenger: Ed can beat the boos
ARSENAL boss Arsene Wenger has backed controversial striker Eduardo to beat the Premier League's boo-boys.
The Croatian hitman was jeered by sections of the Wembley crowd during last night's World Cup qualifier, when England secured a place in South Africa following a resounding 5-1 victory.
Eduardo is facing a two-match European ban — which Arsenal are appealing — after UEFA ruled the Brazil-born forward had "deceived the referee" when he was awarded a dubious spot-kick during the Champions League qualifier against Celtic.
Wenger has already branded the saga as a "witch-hunt", maintaining Eduardo has been unfairly singled out.
But the Gunners boss feels the 26-year-old has been through much worse, having spent the best part of a year on the sidelines following a broken leg.
Wenger said: "Any situation you face as a top-level player you have to deal with, and you can only do that by being mentally strong.
"The situation has been created by the media impact of his case, but that is not the worst.
"The worst thing is that now he is not given penalties when they are penalties. That is much worse.
"The one last night against England was a penalty."
But Wenger insists the unwanted attention will not affect Eduardo's style of play. He added: "I do not believe it will affect his game.
"He is a player who has gone through much more difficult things than that.
"On the one side, a good way to deal with that is that he is in good health.
"This is a minor event compared to what he has gone through before."
Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson may have felt the decision to ban Eduardo will have "sent a message" to the divers, but Arsenal are not giving up hope of having UEFA's ruling overturned.
Wenger stressed: "You want everybody to be treated fairly, and I do not believe he is treated fairly.
"There was a good opportunity to take a media campaign against many players, which you did not do.
"You cannot give him the feeling that he has been treated fairly. You will never get that from him."
The Arsenal manager continued: "I do not want to fight with the whole Premier League because of that. I just think we want to fight against diving.
"I did not hide after the game. I said he made more of it, yes, but considering Eduardo's case it is not a clear case.
"We have proof that he has been touched.
"You will find a lot of players who will make a little bit more of it.
"There is a fine line between being shrewd and everyone supports you and saying it is a dive.
"If you can construct this case, then okay, let's do it.
"But how do you define intent? I saw one last night in Serbia."

Walcott to return soon after international break
LONDON (AP) - Arsenal winger Theo Walcott will return from a back injury soon after the international break.
The 20-year-old England international has been sidelined since Aug. 8 when he picked up the injury in a preseason friendly against Valencia. He will not take part in England's World Cup qualifier against Croatia at Wembley on Wednesday.
"Walcott missed his country's matches in September and is expected to return soon after the international break," Arsenal said on its Web site Monday.
Barca interest in City star opens Premier League door for Gunners legend
According to the News of the World, Barcelona’s interest in Manchester City star Robinho could pave the way for a swap deal involving Arsenal legend Thierry Henry. The European Champions interest in the former Real Madrid forward is widely acknowledged following an approach for the Brazilian last month, and he is likely to become the subject of further speculation as the January transfer window approaches.
The newspaper suggests Mark Hughes has concerns about Robinho’s ability to perform on a consistent basis and would consider off loading the forward if Thierry Henry was included in the deal.
Should Guardiola not sanction the sale of Henry, Hughes will demand £30 million for the player they signed from Real Madrid last summer, but a swap deal may suit both parties.
Henry would suit the global superstar City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed graves and with proven Premier League pedigree Hughes would seemingly welcome the deal according to the paper.
Johan goes under knife
JOHAN DJOUROU'S dream of filling Kolo Toure's boots at Arsenal has been put on hold while he recovers from knee surgery.
The 22-year-old Swiss international defender has had an operation to fix knee cartilage in Geneva.
The Swiss Football Federation reckon he could be out of action until March.
When Djourou first picked up the injury last month, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger had hoped he would return to action within weeks.
Djourou had been hoping to compete for a starting place after the sale of centre-half Toure to Manchester City for £14million.
Wenger has other back-up options, including former Manchester United man Mikael Silvestre and Djourou's Switzerland pal Philippe Senderos.
Djourou has been at Arsenal since he was 16.
Wenger warms to Balotelli
The Under-21 international has pace, power and technique in abundance, but his questionable attitude has seen him dropped by Jose Mourinho recently.
“I consider Inter an excellent squad who can do really well in the Champions League,” Wenger told the Italian media.
“In particular I am keeping an eye out for Balotelli, a player I like very much. In my view he can become one of the greatest.”

Ljungberg linked with sensational Arsenal return
Freddie Ljungberg has been linked with a sensational return to Arsenal Football Club.
The Swedish star is currently plying his trade in America with Seattle Sounders, but he has been linked with a return to the Gunners on loan when the MLS season ends in the winter.
Although the Premier League side are refusing to comment on speculation, Ljungberg’s agent, Claes Elefalk, told Fotbollskanalen: "All I can say is that Fredrik is in London."
The 32-year-old was a hugely popular figure during his nine years with Arsene Wenger’s side, during which time he won two Premier League’s and three FA Cup’s

Denilson signs a new long-term contract
Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that midfielder Denilson has signed a new long-term contract with the Club.
Having joined Arsenal in 2006 from his homeland club Sao Paulo, Denilson (21) firmly established himself in the Gunners’ engine room in the 2008/09 season, making more appearances than any other Arsenal player during the campaign. Having played in every Premier League game, the young midfielder clocked up an impressive 51 appearances in all competitions scoring three goals.
A busy and efficient player with a good eye for a pass, Denilson has captained his country at every level from Under-15 to Under-20 and was a finalist at the 2005 FIFA Under-17 World Championships.
Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger said: “Denilson’s contribution to the Club last season was outstanding. His work rate really was exceptional and it is valuable to have players that we know will perform to the very last minute in such a demanding league. I’m pleased that he has committed his long-term future to the Club. ”
Commenting on his new deal with the Gunners, Denilson said: “My development since I joined back in 2006 has really pleased me, and I just want to build on last season’s performances. We have a hugely talented group of players here, and I am convinced that with everyone working together we’ll be able to achieve great things. Bendtner signs a new long-term contract
Denmark international Nicklas Bendtner has today signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal Football Club.
The forward (21) came into the 2009/10 season looking to build on his performances of last term when he finished second in Arsenal’s appearances table and was the top scorer in the Premier League aged 21 or under - boasting a strike rate of 15 goals in 27 starts. Picking up where he left off for the new campaign, Nicklas has appeared in every fixture to date and is looking to further impress in all competitions.
A key man for the Denmark side, Nicklas has appeared 27 times and scored eight goals for his country and is keen to play his part in a vital World Cup year.
Manager Arsène Wenger commented: “Nicklas has impressed me highly with his application and determination over the last season, you can see that he wants to compete at the highest level and win things with his team-mates. He scored a number of important goals for us last season and he will look to replicate that again this year. However, it’s not just about the goals, his all round contribution has improved and will continue to do so. I’m very pleased that he will be part of the team for years to come.”
Upon signing his new deal, Nicklas said: “It means a lot that I can commit my future to Arsenal because I have a great affection for this Club. I’ve been here for five years now, and my development both on and off the pitch as a player and person is thanks to Arsène Wenger and the team here. We’ve got a group of players that is capable of achieving great success, and I am really excited to be a part of it.”
Everyone at Arsenal is looking forward to Nicklas’ continued contribution for seasons to come.

Official Club statement - Eduardo
The Club is disappointed with Uefa’s decision to suspend Eduardo for two Champions League matches starting with Standard Liege on September 16.
We have been informed that we will receive a “reasoned decision” from Uefa by Thursday of this week. Once we receive Uefa’s rationale, we will make a decision on the next steps.
We have been deeply frustrated by the perfunctory and apparently arbitrary process that Uefa has followed in this instance. We believe it is imperative that Uefa’s explanation for its decision provides clear and comprehensive standards that will be consistently enforced. It is also critical that Uefa provides specific details of the processes it plans to adopt in reviewing all games under its jurisdiction
Top 10 best signings this season
10 Michael Owen (Newcastle to Manchester United, free)
This remarkable free transfer sees him playing with Wayne Rooney in a World Cup season - the results can only be positive. Has marked the start of his United career with a goal at Wigan after a fine pre-season campaign.
Just like old times: Owen's goal against Wigan was a reminder of his capabilities
9 Carlos Tevez (Manchester United to Manchester City, £25.5m)
If you need a striker that will cover the miles and score you goals, you couldn't want for a player better than Tevez. Mark Hughes is constructing an attack packed with stars at Eastlands and the Argentine has the extra incentive of winning over the City fans after crossing the divide.
Red to blue: Former United favourite Tevez and ex-Arsenal star Adebayor
8 Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal to Manchester City, £25m)
City have captured that most precious of player - a prolific striker, proven in the Premier League with Arsenal. The Togo international already has two league goals to his name.
7 Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter Milan to Barcelona, £40m + Samuel Eto'o)
Who wouldn't want the Swedish striker in their side? Pep Guardiola wants Ibrahimovic at the Nou Camp as they prepare to defend silverware on three fronts. The silkiest big man in football.
Swede dreams: Ibrahimovic will line up for the European champions
6 Karim Benzema (Lyon to Real Madrid, £30m, rising to £35m with add-ons)
With the vast array of talent now on show at the Bernabeu you might think it would be hard for the France striker (right) to make an impression.
Five pre-season goals proves otherwise.
5 Thomas Vermaelen (Ajax to Arsenal, £10m)
This classy centre-back brings with him steely defending and even the occasional goal.
The 23-year-old has already impressed in the Premier League and in Europe with his reading of the game.
Settling in: Vermaelen has looked comfortable slotting in at the back for Arsenal
4 Xabi Alonso (Liverpool to Real Madrid, £30m)
The midfield maestro is the man Real coach Manuel Pellegrini wants to shepherd his awesome array of stars to success. Proved his worth at Liverpool who are missing him greatly this season already.
Architect: Alonso
Goal machine: Eto'o
3 Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona to Inter Milan)
An experienced player at the very top of the game, Inter have arguably got the better end of the deal involving Ibrahimovic. Able to link play and can destroy teams on his own. A big-time player.
2 Kaka (AC Milan to Real Madrid, £56m)
Another huge summer signing for Real will make the Madrid front-line easily the most dangerous in the world. The Brazil superstar broke Milan fans' hearts when he moved.
All white now: Kaka ended his love affair with AC Milan
1 Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United to Real Madrid, £80m)
The will he-wont he saga of the decade. Well, he did and with it the flying winger has signalled a shift in power between the European football giants. Ronaldo's game is all about pace, skill, attitude and, more importantly, goals. How can Manchester United replace him?
Dream move: Ronaldo now has everything he ever wanted
